"cycle functions as both break and culmination in nunu’s greater body-of-work. It is a love/hate story about time and habits, and a debut album that explores the French artist’s capacity to imbue individual works with personality and aura. Having spent the past several years releasing disorientingly beautiful edit packs and collections of archival material (from 2013 to 2019), cycle also operates as a reintroduction to an artist who is at their best when transforming the personal into spectacularly original sonic formations.

cycle has also provided nunu with an opportunity to write in a continuous and familiar manner, yet with a different set of contingencies for each track. Like past nunu works, including 2016’s Mind Body Dialogue and 2018’s SCUM, cycle revels in dissonance, but also takes the time to explore minute textural egresses and rhythmic blackholes. While a clear step away from past dancefloor-intended tracks, nunu’s progression through nine “cycles” is no less physically demanding.

Built on a single set of loops, drums and synths, the album has been constructed from a set of self-imposed limitations. Yet, rather than strive for an impossible minimalism, cycle is instead full of intriguing diversions, impossibly layered textures and sequence-after-sequence of drum-and-vocal intrusions. The result hues closer to nunu’s sonic vision than any previous release, an unholy assemblage that is as much a record about method and time as it is the artist’s relationship to their own tools and body" words by Gabe Meier
